Light Kit for LEGO® Sets Not Working? Here Is What to Check First

You have finished the install. You power it on. Nothing lights up.

Don't panic, and don't contact support just yet. This is one of the most common situations we hear about, and in the vast majority of cases it is resolved by checking one of three things. Work through them in order and you will almost certainly find the cause.

Check 1: Your power source

The single most common cause of a Light My Bricks kit not turning on is the power source.

If you are running on battery, check two things: that the battery is inserted the correct way round, and that it is actually charged. A flat or incorrectly oriented battery looks identical to a wiring fault from the outside.

If you are running on USB power, check that the cable is fully connected at both ends and that the power source it is plugged into is actually supplying power. A USB port on a switched-off device, a faulty wall adapter, or a cable that is not fully seated will all produce the same result: nothing.

Check 2: Your connections

If the power source checks out, the next thing to look at is every connection point along the circuit.

Flat flex connectors and component plugs are designed to click firmly into place. It is easy for a plug to look seated when it is actually just resting against the port rather than fully clicked in. A connection that is 90% in will still produce no light.

Go along every connection point in your build and press each one firmly until you feel it seat properly. Pay particular attention to any connection you installed in a tight or awkward spot during the build, as these are the most likely candidates.

Check 3: Component-specific causes

If both the power source and all connections check out but the kit is still not working, the cause may be specific to a particular component in your build.

The most common component-specific cause is Flux Touch Plates alignment. If your build uses Flux Touch Plates as wireless power connectors between sections, misaligned plates produce a fault that looks identical to a power or connection issue. We have a dedicated guide that covers exactly what to check and how to fix it.

If Flux Touch Plates are part of your build, read the Flux Touch Plates troubleshooting guide before contacting support. It resolves this case almost every time.

If you have checked all three and it still is not working

At this point you have ruled out the most common causes. A kit that is still not working after all three checks have been completed is a genuine support case, and the team can help diagnose it from there.

When you reach out, let us know which checks you have already done and what you observed at each step. That information makes it significantly faster to identify what is actually happening. Contact our support team here.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Light My Bricks kit turn on sometimes but not others?

Intermittent lighting is almost always a connection that is not fully seated. When a plug is partially in, slight pressure or movement can make the connection briefly and then break it again. Go through every connection point and press each one firmly into place. Pay particular attention to connections inside tight or enclosed sections of the build where it can be hard to tell whether the plug has fully clicked in.

My lights worked during the install but stopped working when I put the build together. What happened?

This is usually a connection that was inadvertently dislodged during the final stages of the build. When placing the last sections of a build, cables and connectors can be pushed or pulled out of position. Go back through the build section by section and check every connection point, paying closest attention to any areas you worked on last.

Only some of my lights are working, not all of them. What does that mean?

When only part of a kit lights up, the fault is almost always localised to a specific section of the circuit rather than the power source. A power source fault would typically prevent everything from lighting up. The diagnostic approach depends on whether your build uses Flux Touch Plates.

If your build uses Flux Touch Plates: start with the power off. Check the cables on the touch plate pair for the affected section and make sure they face the same direction as shown in the guide. With the power still off, lift the affected section off and turn the power on to confirm the rest of the build lights up correctly. Then replace the section with the plates correctly aligned and test again.

If your build does not use Flux Touch Plates: with the power off, disconnect one belt or cable at a time, starting from the furthest point from your power source. Turn the power on after each disconnection to test. When the lights come back, the last component you disconnected is the cause. Re-seat it with a straight plug and enough slack, then test again.

Important: always turn the power off before disconnecting or reconnecting anything during this process. Unplugging components while the power is on can cause a short that damages your power source.

My lights are dimming rather than completely off. What causes that?

Dimming rather than a complete blackout usually points to one of two things: an underpowered source or a partial short in the circuit. First, check your power source. LMB products require 5V 2.4A input. Switch to a verified LMB USB power adapter if you are not already using one. If the correct power source does not resolve the dimming, the cause is likely a partially shorted or pinched cable in the circuit. With the power off, disconnect the belt or cable feeding the affected section and test with the power on. If the remaining lights are fully bright, begin reconnecting components one at a time with the power off between each step until the dimming returns. The last component reconnected before it dims is where the fault is.

I have checked everything and nothing has worked. Is my kit faulty?

It is possible, though uncommon. Before concluding the kit is faulty, try isolating individual components by connecting just one or two directly to the power source to see whether those light up. This helps identify whether the issue is with a specific component or with the broader circuit. If you have worked through the full diagnostic process and it is still unresolved, contact our support team with a description of what you observed at each step. Genuine component faults are covered under warranty when using a verified LMB power source.

Does it matter which USB power source I use?

Yes. LMB products are designed for 5V 2.4A input. We strongly recommend using only a verified Light My Bricks USB power adapter or a Light My Bricks power bank matched to this specification. Use of any other power source, including higher-voltage adapters, is at your own risk and is not covered by warranty. If you are currently using a non-LMB adapter and your lights are dim or intermittent, switching to the correct LMB power source is the first thing to try.

Can I damage my lighting kit by using the wrong battery?

LMB battery units are designed for specific battery types as specified in the product instructions. Using the correct battery type and inserting it with the correct orientation is important. If you are unsure which battery your unit takes, check the product page or install guide for your specific kit before inserting anything.
